Breastfeeding helps you and your baby stay healthy. Not only does breastfeeding support the growth and development of your baby, but it also protects against illness and infection.

The Snohomish Health District's Women, Infants, & Children (WIC) program encourages all new moms to breastfeed and provides breastfeeding support and resource information.

Your right to breastfeed

Washington State protects women's rights to breastfeed in public places, including parks, buses, stores, and government buildings.

All women should know their breastfeeding rights — especially those headed back to work. Employers are required to provide breastfeeding women with a reasonable break time and a private, non-bathroom place to express milk during the work day until their child is 1 year old.

Breastfeeding resources and support

The Breastfeeding Coalition of Snohomish County maintains a Breastfeeding Resource Guide listing:

  • Community breastfeeding services
  • Hospital breastfeeding services
  • Pumps and supplies

The list is updated once a year.

Advice for breastfeeding problems

Some Snohomish Health District WIC staff, and others in the resource guide, have passed an exam to become International Board Certified Lactation Consultants (IBCLC). These consultants are experts in breastfeeding problems and solutions.

We also have breastfeeding peer counselors in our WIC / First Steps clinics. Peer counselors are women ready to share their first hand experiences to help you breastfeed your baby successfully.
