Today’s topic: Meningococcal vaccine

Action requested:  Be aware of guidance to support provider recommendations to patients about meningococcal B vaccine.

Background & Recommendations: In October 2015, the Advisory Committee on Immunization Practice (ACIP) recommended meningococcal B vaccine for patients at high risk for this disease and for outbreak control, but left it to providers’ discretion whether or not to recommend the vaccine for other patients ( This recommendation differs from the ACIP recommendation for meningococcal conjugate ACYW vaccine (MCV4), which is recommended for all persons 11 through 18 years of age (  The Washington State Department of Health has issued guidance to help providers manage use of the meningococcal B vaccine, including recommended language when talking with parents of children who are not at high risk.  See
